Why Feeling Bad Isn’t Bad

Here’s a two-fer…

Kudos to IntolerantElle for her kudos to Davona of Love and Blunder.

The general context is this: In response to a posting over at Here We Stand, where Chris Williams finished his posting with the question:

How do you get people to start studying the Scriptures and their Catechisms without making them (horror of horrors) uncomfortable?

Davona responded with a tremendously insightful comment of her own:

We need to remind people that they are really sinners. And if you feel bad about yourself, it’s not low self esteem, it’s self honesty. Go to church, and confess. God has already offered the sacrifice.

This is good stuff — meaningful, Lutheran stuff! None of this “I’m OK, you’re OK!” seeker-sensitive stuff, just good, solid, orthodox Law and Gospel.

Feeling bad, and being broken by the Law, is only bad if/when you don’t have the healing balm of the Gospel for application to your wounds.

Amen!
