The Early Church vs. Today

Bob Waters has a great posting over at Watersblogged, in which he cogently deals with the topic of the Church and its interaction with the prevalent culture/society.

Basically, Bob makes a very perceptive observation, based on a comparison of how the early church dealt, & today’s church deals, with secular society. The observation is this: The early church and today’s church have taken opposite tacks in dealing with secular culture.

Not that I’ve given this a significant amount of thought, but it is definitely something that I’ve noted. Rather than standing firm in/on the distinctiveness that comes from/with being Christian (as was done in/by the early church), the prevailing thought today is to somehow harmonize Christian distinctives with secular sensibilities. Unfortunately, such harmonization is a recipe for disaster — one that inevitably results in the loss of the Christian distinctives!

Thankfully, we can safely rest in the comforting assurance that God will forever sustain a faithful remnant.
