Thoughts

Some random, if not intemperate, thoughts — [i.e., I know I'm painting with very broad strokes here, but I'm feeling cranky enough to just say them...]

I wonder how the majority of “average” Joe & Janie Pewsitter-type folk in our LCMS congregations would react if they had their congregational constitutions read to them in place of the sermon on Sunday? I daresay that a great many would be jolted into reacting with shock and horror. Particularly for sections that deal with Scriptural & Confessional subscriptions, not to mention church discipline!

And if that sermon were followed up with a reading of the Small Catechism the next Sunday? Why, I bet you even more folks would get bent out of shape, what with all the absolutism & truth claims that abound in the SC!

And if the 3rd Sunday began a series of readings from the Book of Concord… Whew! Then I know that some folks would be mightily offended by all the unloving, legalistic, and judgmental pronouncements that emanate from that august tome.

Truth be told, I think even a cynic like me would be taken aback by the furor that would arise from folks being confronted with what it means to be an actual, quia-type confessional Lutheran. I really don’t think that too many folks know, and even fewer would care to know.

Maybe I’m thinking of these things because I have an Elders meeting tonight…
Crankily,
