Non-Blogging Pursuits
It’s been an unusally blog-free week for me. My reading of the “ususal suspects” has fallen behind (the denizens of the Confessional Lutheran blogosphere are nothing if not prolific!), so I haven’t been gleaning tidbits from my usual sources. Real life has been intruding as well. Work’s been busy, the wife’s started a new job, and the kids are deserving of every bit of red hair they have on their heads!
Probably most significant is that I’ve made an effort to be reading more books from the local public library. I want to encourage the kids in their enthusiasm for the library, and for reading books as a way to spend leisure time other than automatically plopping in front of the TV or the computer. Not that I’m against either of those, mind you, but I don’t want them to miss out on the joys of reading, which can be more engaging than any TV show or computer game.
As a result, I’ve finally given in & began reading something that, at one point a few years back, I promised myself I would never read: the Left Behind series. I’ll probably be blogging about the books more in depth in the future, but for now let me just say that, while the theology is as disturbingly bad as I thought it would be (frankly, Jenkins & LaHaye have merely created an alternate future history in which their eisegesis is “proven” to be “correct”…), the books are enjoyable enough page turners. They are not great literature, by any means, but they are entertaining enough, so long as one is vigilant enough to not fall prey to their relentless touting of false theology.
Finally, I must confess that a computer game has caught my fancy.
Yup, Civ IV is out, and it’s better than ever. It’s amazing just how easily this game can suck you in. You start playing with all good & innocent intentions, and look up only to see that a few hours have passed by. It’s still a great game, and I’m impressed with the ways in which they’ve been able to improve it from Civ III.
