Life is not Easy
The “Theology of Glory” sells folks a faulty bill of goods. It does so in a way that almost inevitably will cause folks to doubt their faith during times of trouble, because it either refuses to acknowledge the existence of trouble, or it pins that trouble squarely on the person who is being crushed by the Law.
Over at Beggar’s All, Tim wrote a nice posting on this, and there’s a nice comment thread to boot.
In the 10/22 issue of World Magazine, Joel Belz wrote a column that dealt nicely with this topic, entitled Uphill all the way. In it, Belz deals with the constant struggle that is our fallen existence, and does so in a cogent & straightforward way.
Under a “Theology of Glory” there is no respite from the grind that results from our inability to measure up.
Fortunately, and thankfully, the “Theology of the Cross” gives us hope!
When we are driven to the Cross — to Christ and away from ourselves — we find the balm of the Gospel. It gives us the true hope and tangible comfort necessary to endure our time in this mortal coil. Each day will bring with it new sorrows, for that is how the enemy will try to steal us away from our loving Lord and Savior. However, we need not fret, for our safety has been guaranteed, our ransom has been paid, and our room has been reserved. God is faithful, and He will most certainly bring us safely home!
Nope, life is not easy — but God is good. And that’s all we need…
