AI:5 - Three times three

I stand by my earlier prediction.

Taylor Hicks will be the next American Idol — as it should be. He owned the stage last night, knocking all three songs out of the park.

Kat did outperform Elliot (although his fans will never admit it…); however, it’s still quite likely that she won’t be rewarded for it. The results at DialIdol.com are too close to call, with Kat & Elliot being more or less in a statistical dead heat, and Taylor being in front by just a hair beyond the margin-of-error. I’m actually surprised that it’s as close as it looks to be:

Taylor: 31.638 (DialIdol Score) +/- 1.512
Kat: 28.759 +/- 1.544
Elliot: 28.286 +/- 1.549

So it really could be anyone going home tonight; however, I still think Taylor’s as safe as safe can be.

As for the performances…

Contra the past few seasons, Clive Davis did a horrible job with song selection (and it was a nicely comedic moment when Randy criticized Kat, who exasperatedly exclaimed that she didn’t choose the song…), and the judges did and exceptionally good job with theirs. I’ve got nothing of significance to say in terms of criticism for any of them — they played out pretty much according to my expectations. Taylor nailed all three. Kat nailed her second & third songs (and was just ok on the first). Elliot did a very nice job with his first song, but the second & third songs just left me kind of blah/cold.

In the end, my take on things is based on a great opinion piece that TK wrote over at Katie’s Beer, in which she posited that Taylor not only deserves to win, his winning is actually necessary for the good of the music industry.

The voting at Schloß TB:
Mel: Taylor
Deb: Taylor
ghp: Taylor

Going Home: Kat
Note: I don’t want this to be the result, and I won’t be surprised if it’s Elliot instead; however, I’d like to stay true to my prediction from yesterday…
