Lemming that I am, since I’ve been tagged by the Seminarian-formerly-known-as-Vicar Lehmann & The Tarheel Lutheran, I’ll give it a whack…

nb: I’ve changed the listings from one to two/three/four books, because, well, I can & I don’t want to limit myself…
1. Two books that changed your life:

  • The Hammer of God by Bo Giertz
  • The Fire and the Staff by Klemet Preus

2. Two books that you’ve read more than once:

  • Sparkplug of the Hornets by Stephen W. Meader
  • The Hammer of God by Bo Giertz

3. Two books you’d want on a desert island:

  • The Bible (NKJV), natch…
  • Lutheran Service Book from CPH

4. Two books that made you laugh:

  • Accidental Empires by Robert X. Cringely
  • Mankind: Have A Nice Day by Mick Foley

5. Two books that made you cry:

  • Love You Forever by Robert N. Munsch & Sheila McGraw — (just thinking about it almost tears me up - I’m such a sap…)
  • The Fire and the Staff by Klemet Preus — (I weep for Missouri, and for American Lutheranism…)

6. Three books that you wish had been written:

  • Autobiography by Martin Luther — (though some new film reviews will suffice…)
  • Christian Doctrine for Every Occasion by St. Paul
  • The Bible: The Authoritative Exhaustive Commentary by Jesus Christ

7. Two books that you wish had never been written:

  • The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan
  • The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin

8. Three books you’re currently reading:

  • A Tale of Two Synods by Mark E. Braun
  • Anatomy of an Explosion by Kurt Marquart
  • Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions from CPH

9. Three books you’ve been meaning to read:

  • The Book of Concord (I’m slack, I know…)
  • The Conservative Reformation and Its Theology by C.P. Krauth
  • The Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther

I’ll leave any explanatory text for a later date, if/when questions get asked about why I chose what I chose…

Finally, I officially tag no one, although I would be interested to see what TK & big sis would give for their answers (and, if big sis is interested in responding, I’ll gladly post her answers for her if she’ll email them to me…)

The ‘Authoritative Exhaustive Commentary on the Bible’ one is funny. I’ve seen something like that on several people’s responses.

But I remember a moment in seminary (Gordon-Conwell, before I decided I was Lutheran) during my New Testament Interpretation course when something dawned on me. The professor was treating the text as if God had inspired all the information, but accidentally had it written in the wrong genre. Genre-correction was the task of the interpreter. The more I’ve thought about that, the more I think I need to take the genre as a corrective to me, as much as the doctrine is. We’re all commentary covetors. Why? Maybe that’s a problem to be addressed.

I think I’ll start a 12-Step group called “Genre Fixers Anonymous.”

Well, I think that I covet commentaries because I basically don’t trust myself to ferret out the proper meaning of Scripture, albeit not enough to solely rely on the undershepherd to whom my spiritual well being has been entrusted. I still want to try and do some of it myself!

An alternate title that has just occurred to me, in the same vein, is this: Adiaphora Begone: Thus Saith The LORD! by Jesus Christ (forward by St. Paul & Martin Luther)
