Routines, vacations, and anticipated expectations
I always expect that I’ll get more done when I get some time off. And I never — never — actually do it.
I generally am a creature of habit, and a willing participant in the regular daily routine. I really do take comfort in the predictability of a “normal routine,” even when I fixate on any upcoming break in that routine, particularly if it’s a 3-day weekend, or a longer break like the 2 weeks I’m just about to finish up (granted, this current break was taken for the dual purposes of not having to spend $$$ to send the kids to daycare, and to use up some vacation time before I lose it, but still, you know what I mean…).
I fixate on things like reading (books, journals, etc.), writing, getting my life organized (e.g., finally implementing some form of GTD), & catching up on various other types of projects that get pushed to the periphery by the events of everyday life.
The thing is, I always seem to fall short of my plans & expectations. Way short. Way, WAY, short. ![]()
I usually end up just vegging out & being slack. Now, I don’t always have problems with that, although it does add to my stress and/or guilt levels. Because, after all, I really should be oh-so-much-more-productive, right?
Oh well, I’m sure it’ll change by the time I get my next chunk of time off, right? ![]()
