AI:6 - 12 Gasping Guys

Finally, Idol in it’s best form — singers singing, a band playing, songs edited to within an inch of their lives, cheesy video clip packages, judges sniping, Seacrest tempting kids to fight with Simon, Seacrest & Simon fighting like an old married couple, Seacrest attempting to act credibly hetero, Simon generally being right, and 1-800-IDOLS## numbers. Good times!

2 hours, 12 guys, and performances that pretty easily segment the singers into clear-cut categories.

The Good/Safe:

  • Chris Sligh - “Typical” — The performance of the night, IMO. Hurley’s little brother has got a killer set of pipes, and a strong, rich, lovely tone to his voice. He’s only going to get better and better. And better. He does, however, need to begin avoiding Seacrest’s little traps, and not allow himself to be baited into insulting Simon.
  • Blake Lewis - “Somewhere Only We Know” — Performance #1a of the night. The lovechild (i.e., if two men could procreate, what/who the offspring would look like…) of SYTYCD? contestants Ivan & Travis established himself as a near lock for the finals with his performance. He’s got the voice, the looks, and the personality to make it long way in this competition.
  • Phil Stacey - “I Could Not Ask for More” — A horrific start yielded to a nicely done performance. Combined with his great “nice-guy” personality & back story, he has no worries this week.

The Meh/Safe:

  • Chris Richardson - “I Don’t Wanna Be” — He darned near made it into my top group (replacing Phil). I think he’s got a very good voice, and a great look. Because I can, however, remember just how well Bo did this song back in AI:4, I just can’t bump him up because his rendition paled in comparison to Bo’s.
  • Brandon Rogers - “Rock with You” — Not a great performance, but he’s just way too good to not make it past this week.
  • Nick Pedro - “Now and Forever” — Of the “meh”-type boring performances this week (and there were way too many!), Nick’s was the best, mainly because I think he has a better voice than the guys in the next group…

The Meh/Unsafe:

  • Rudy Cardenas - “Free Ride” — Pure cheez. Not bad, just cheezy. And, if he didn’t look like Clay’s brunette doppelgänger — seriously, the way he carried himself on stage, his facial expressions, and even the way he held the mic — I don’t know if anyone ever will! I won’t miss him when he’s (eventually) gone.
  • Jared Cotter - “Back at One” — Worse than cheez - bland & blah. At least cheez has some flavor.
  • A.J. Tabaldo - “Never Too Much” — If for no other reason than the popped collar, A.J. needs to be gone. Besides, I don’t really like his voice all that much. Lucky for him, the guys in the next group decided to truly stink up the joint.

The Bad/At-Risk:

  • Sundance Head - “Nights in White Satin” — Wow. What a disappointment. I’d like to see him make it to at least next week, if only to see if he can redeem himself. I fear, however, that he won’t get that chance. And I was very surprised to see that he’s shorter than Seacrest…
  • Paul Kim - “Careless Whisper” — Absolutely & utterly horrific — and that’s just the barefoot schtick! (thank you, I’ll be hear all week  ) Seriously, though, he just butchered that song. He’s definitely at risk, and I’ll be shocked if he makes the finals.
  • Sanjaya Malakar - “More and More” — Despite my daughter’s tween affinity for him, I just don’t like him. Simon was at his most harshly correct in his assessment of young Sanjaya. While his voice does have some pleasantness about it, I don’t like his look, and he doesn’t yet have the ability to actually use his voice to its fullest advantage. I hope he’s gone - if not this week, then soon & before the finals.

Summary:
I’m going to hold off on hard & fast specific predictions until the finals begin. That said, I’m pretty confident that the two guys eliminated this week will come from my bottom two groups. And I’m hoping that they’ll be any of those six other than Sundance.

Tonight, the girls. Here’s hoping they’re better than the guys!

Except for Chris Sligh I have a hard time distinguishing this group. (Of course I know Sundance and Sanjaya because they stand out.) I liked Blake, but I had to go to the AI website to figure out which one he was.

I thought the girls absolutely kicked the guys collective butt!
