AI:6 - Both kinds of music

Last night, we were treated to both kinds of music found at Bob’s Country Bunker: Country and Western. (Good Lord, but the Blues Brothers was an awesome movie…)

I’m short on time, among other things, so here we go…

When will I predict the winner? Now. Jordin will win American Idol. Bank it. She’s got the whole package (looks, personality, confidence, youth) and the upward trajectory that I haven’t seen all together since Kelly Clarkson. Jordin might not need the victory in order to have a great career, but the AI franchise needs her, if it is to have any shred of credibility as the creator of pop stars who are truly pop stars, and not just niche talents. Jordin’s victory could/will take away much of the bad taste generated by the rise of VoteForTheWorst.com. Last night, she was magnificent in how she worked her way through the song, telling the story & building up throughout, so that she could bring it home with all the necessary power & emotion.

Who else did good? Phil & Melinda. Phil finally showed that he belongs. I still wouldn’t buy his album, but I can now say that I think he should make one — and it should be C&W. Melinda did another very professional job, and finally looked good to boot (her hair, makeup, & blouse were all just outstanding!). She could win & I wouldn’t be surprised. Disappointed, yes, but surprised, no. She can be a singing star, but I just don’t think she’s a pop idol. Her overall vibe just isn’t young and/or hip enough for that, even as her talent is undeniable.

What about Blake & LaKisha? Blake is clearly the best guy, and he also clearly brings something to the table that AI hasn’t really had before — a 21st-Century Rat-Pack-ish hip coolness. He might be the only person other than Jordin who has what it takes to be worthy of what is truly meant by & encompassed within the “pop idol” label. LaKisha is what she is. She’s a power diva, who doesn’t seem to take all that well to coaching & direction. Last night, all 3 judges were spot-on with their comments about how she over-sang the song, and just seemingly decided to shout at us by the last 1/3 of the song. She’s good for what she is, but she ain’t a pop idol.

Didn’t Chris sing? Well, I guess that he did. That said, Chris certainly didn’t stand out in any way other than getting sassy to Simon (about singing nasally on purpose), and perhaps pandering to the Virginia Tech tragedy. I certainly hope he didn’t mean to, but it sure sounded to me like his comments were placed/delivered in such a way that they sounded like a desperate ploy to garner some sympathy votes.

Who else might there be? Oh yeah, him. Sanjaya was horrible. Last week he was (I hate to admit) tolerable. This week, he threw all that away in a way that I hope was obvious enough to cause folks to come to their senses & not vote for him any more.

Good theme week? Yes, I think it was. Possibly the best C&W week AI has had. Martina McBride was certainly a very, very good coach/mentor. It was quite enjoyable overall, and even the judges (including Simon the C&W hater) seemed to like it.

Who peed in Seacrest’s corn flakes? I don’t know, but he certainly was crankier than normal, wasn’t he?

Anything else? Nope, that about covers it (although I did miss Haley’s legs…).
