AI:7 - 12 Far-out Femmes
The most talent ever?
Time for the girls to prove it.
Cold & flu have been running through AI. Maybe that’ll be the excuse they give for Paula’s loopiness tonight - and she certainly looks a little dippity-dopitied up. As per the usual.
More sparring, based on last night’s activities. Joy. It’s too contrived to be that funny anymore.
Once more unto the breach…
Kristy Lee Cook (24 - Selma, OR) “Rescue Me” - Very pretty. Very blonde. Very Country & Western. Ride ‘em cowgirl. Not a bad delivery of the song, but neither was there much depth, nor power to it. She also did a funky little eye-bug-out to the camera a few times in her efforts to “connect” with the audience. Not bad, but not a great start to the show. Ultimately forgettable. Flu & bronchitis? Bummer, but I wouldn’t have thought she was ill. Just boring. But mayhaps being ill is the reason, and that could be enough (along with her nice voice & great looks) to buy her another week.
Joanne Borgella (25 - Hoboken, NJ) “Say A Little Prayer” - Plus-size power. Pretty, sweet, & genuine. Unfortunately, her delivery of the song was more than a little too shaky to be, well, good. Her tempo & timing also seemed to be off. That was really disappointing. She did nothing to stand out & grab some votes in a chokehold. I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt her, but I fear it might.
Alaina Whitaker (16 [17 tomorrow] - Tulsa, OK) “More Today Than Yesterday” - Needs to get her teeth fixed. Heavy on the reverb effects. Finally, a girl remembered that this is a competition. Controlled & powerful. Smooth. Good. Very good. She ought to be safe as a kitteh this week, and possibly (probably?) into the top 12.
Amanda Overmeyer (23 - Mulberry, IN) “Please Don’t Go” - She looks and sounds older than her 23 years. I want her to do well. I like her rendition of the song, although I’m not a huge fan of her faux-scatting. I think she’s unique & likable enough that she’ll be safe this week. Authentic is a good word for her. I like her as a rock frontman, but I would also like to see/hear her do some more, straight-up, pop singing. She’ll need to do that if she wants to be anything more than a novelty that overstays its welcome (see McKibbin, Nikki)
Amy Davis (25 - Lowell, IN) “Where The Boys Are” - NW Indiana’s own bikini model starts out with a walk on the mild side. It might have been boring, but at least her voice sounded thin & shaky. I think that she could be in big trouble, as this was the worst performance of the night. When Paula has to lead with the positive being a comment on the singer’s looks, well, that’s just not a good thing. Not good at all.
Brooke White (24 - Mesa, AZ) “Happy Together” - The good girl. Pretty in an almost hippie-chic kinda way. Cute, genuine, & sweet. This girl can sing. Her nerves showed up during the chorus, when she had to carry some notes for a while at full power. In the end, though, it was a good, solid performance.
Alexandrea Lushington (17 - Douglasville, GA) “Spinning Wheel” - Seems to be a nice young lady. Finally, a “throwing-down-the-gauntlet” performance. She performed very well, and sounded great. Smooooooth & powerful. Youth, personality, spunk, & mad skillz. At this point, I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t make the finals. In the “exception to prove the rule” category, Simon got this one wrong.
Kady Malloy (18 - Houston, TX) “Groovy Kind Of Love” - Our blonde mimic. She’s hot and she looks like she knows it. Nice vocal tone. Good control. Did the song in a ballad-y way, yet it didn’t come off as too terribly boring. Not great, but it certainly promises possible future greatness. The potential is strong in this one. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any voting-bloc tension/splitting between her and Alaina. She’ll be safe this week, and will get another chance to show us what/who she really is. A better song choice will help her, provided she doesn’t overthink/overanalyze things while she’s in the moment.
Asia’h Epperson (19 - Joplin, MO) “Another Piece Of My Heart” - She’s my darkhorse candidate on the girl’s side of the bracket. She has a great story, a great look, a great attitude, and a great sound. Performance of the night, IMO. Good, good, good! What a cutie! Another one who is as safe as a kitteh.
Ramiele Malubay (20 - Miramar, FL) “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” - The pint-sized Filipina powerhouse. She’s also another of the girls who looks to be genuinely nice. She chose an understated song, which unfortunately can be really difficult to use as a vehicle for delivering a powerhouse performance. That said, she did a very, very nice job with it. She should also be safe, quite probably until well into the finals.
Syesha Mercado (21 - Sarasota, FL) “Tobacco Road” - I’m expecting great things from her, now that her voice has had time to heal. She carries herself well, and has a nice look & personality. There’s a star quality about her - that legendary & elusive “X Factor”. Tobacco Road? Not really a good choice to show off her vocal chops. I guess she did as good a job as possible with it. Good but nowhere near great. More than enough to keep her safe in the kitteh pen.
Carly Smithson (24 - San Diego, CA) “Shadow Of Your Smile” - A second-chance recording artist, and along with Michael Johns one of the top two “touted by the producers/AI machine” contestants heading into the semifinal rounds. I actually like her speaking voice accent more than her singing voice (Irish accents are hot!). I don’t think her vocal abilities and this song were well matched. She’s got enough buzz about her, though, that it won’t matter. She’s safe until the finals. NOT THE BEST VOCAL OF THE TOP 24. Not by a longshot - the Dawg was talking out his ass, while Simon was back to being right. Carly was ok but not great, and certainly not good enough to have warranted so much buzz. She didn’t do anywhere near as much with the money slot as Michael Johns did last night.
Overall, I’d call it a draw between the guys & girls.
VoteForTheWorst.com is touting Danny & Amy. I agree that they were the two worst performers, or a least the two that I’d like to see gone.
DialIdol.com have pegged Chikieze/Garret & Joanne/Amy as going home.
(note: my predictions were made & written before I checked DialIdol.com)
At Risk: Kristy Lee, Joanne, Amanda, Amy, & Kady
Who Should Go: Kristy Lee & Amy
Who Will Go: Joanne & Amy
Tomorrow: 4 kids bite the dust.
