Faygo remembers
I had occasion to purchase a Faygo Redpop yesterday. For some odd reason, it just jumped out at me from the convenience store beverage racks.
And it reminded me both of my Grandpa Piper, and of the video clip above.
Faygo is a Detroit brand, right up there with Vernors & Towne Club. Y’all who grew up in the Metro Detroit area know what I mean…
I spent a lot of time with my Grandpa Piper when I was a wee lad. I saw him every day during the school year during my K-2 years. He drove me & big sis to school (me to grade school, big sis to high school), and picked us up afterward. I spent lots of time with that wonderful man. In a great many ways, he was the perfect grandfather for a little dude like me (with absolutely no disrespect meant to my Papa (Grandpa Jones), who brought a different set of equally wonderful qualities to the table. It’s just that I’ve grown to more fully appreciate him in adulthood…).
One of the things I remember about Grandpa is directly related to Faygo and the video clip embedded above. Shortly after the ad campaign started, Grandpa wrote a letter to Faygo commending them on the song & the campaign. In response, Faygo sent him a 45-rpm record of the song in the ad/clip. I remember listening to that 45 and being awed that he actually got a response from Faygo. And I also recall just how tickled he was to have received it.
And, thanks to the wonders of Wikipedia & the Internets, I can enjoy it again today.
Cool…
