AI:5 - The Century The Music Died
BRING BACK BARRY MANILOW!!
Phew!
Thanks for letting me get that out of my system… :dizzy:
Music of the 21st Century? Gimme a break! What last night proved was that the 21st Century has produced a whole lotta nothing. I weep for the youth who will look back on the past six years as their nostalgia years. (note to big sis — I think that #3 is the first one who is suffering at least as much, if not more than, you did in the 70’s…
)
Last night was so bad, IMO, it took the Crankinalysis(tm) Machine to within an inch of its life! ![]()
The judges were cranky, justifiably so, although once again Paris got a whole boatload of unjustified & unjustifiable judge-love (and there was a certain other type of judge-love lobbed Ace’s way by Paula, but we won’t talk about that until word of the lawsuit breaks, ok?).
No one really stood out as being head & shoulders above the rest, although a few were (running the risk of damning them with faint praise) better than the rest, and no one was drop-dead horrible (although Paris came awful darned close…). So, I really only have two groups this week:
The Good: Chris, Taylor, Elliot, & Bucky. While nobody excelled as much as in past weeks, these four gave good, solid performances, even when they didn’t make stellar song choices. Chris got some unfounded criticism from Simon, as, IMO, you can’t praise someone for not compromising one week & then basically ding them for it the very next week. Creed may not be the finest example of 21st Century music, but it certainly meets the criteria, and Chris sang it reasonably well. Taylor should be commended (and it scares me that I agree with Paula ) for dialing things back a bit & just singing. He proved that he can excel even when he does only that. Elliot did a nice job with his song, especially as it can be death to sing a song that was well done by a pantheon-level (props to Bill Simmons - search for “pantheon” on this page) idol like Bo. He’s smooth. Just not smooth enough to win it all… That leaves Bucky, who I think actually did the best job of combining song choice & performance with persona this week. He went country. He is country. He was good. He will be safe.
The Rest: Ace, Katharine, Kellie, Lisa, Mandisa, & Paris. Ace doesn’t sing so much as he emotes. I didn’t think it was possible for someone to do so more than Constantine, but Ace does. Ace needs to sing if he wants to stay around, no matter how much Paula wants to hear about his scar. (Ok, so we won’t mention it again, starting… now.) Katharine once again looked really good, and sounded about as good as anyone can sound when singing a Christina Aguilera song. She’s better than that. If Western-Union hadn’t just stopped the service, we could send her a telegram to let her know. For Kellie, it was an up & down night. On the upside, country was a good genre choice. On the downside, any Faith Hill song would’ve been better than Suds in the Bucket. On the upside, her makeup was much better (although she looked better with little-to-no makeup in the video clip…) this week. On the downside, those jeans made her butt look huge. That brings us to little Lisa. I’m not too hopeful. As a corollary to my early statement re: Elliot’s song choice, let me add this — never sing a song by an idol vet gone multi-platinum. I.e., NEVER sing a song by Kelly or Clay! (sing Baby Mama all you like, but just don’t expect me to listen…) Mandisa — Indulgent? Yes. Oversung? Yes. Horrifically bad theology? YES! Disappointing? Sadly, yes. Paris — Simon was spot-on wrt to this train-wreck of a performance. It was like watching a little girl dress up & play act like her older sister… if her older sister works nights on the main stage at Cheetah’s! Sad, but true. And, yet, Randy & Paula loved it. Boneheads.
The voting at Schloß TB:
Mel: Kellie
Deb: Taylor
ghp: Chris
Bottom 3: Lisa, Bucky, & Ace.
Note: I’d put Kevin in again, if only to make up for two weeks ago, but that’d just be piling on, right? ![]()
Going Home: Lisa
Note: I’d rather see Ace or Paris depart, but objectively I think that this is the week that Lisa will be going home.

Well, my day is now complete! I agree with your analysis of last night…it was all around bad! I especially liked Elliott…as you said too bad he doesn’t have the “it” factor to go all the way. I am sick to death of Ace…he’s not even looking all that pretty to me anymore! I just love when the crankanalysis machine gets going!!! At least you had samoa ice cream…
love ya!
